Meet Ravi

My first useful hiking lesson was choosing a shorter route.

Plan well. Walk steadily. Return with margin.

Hi, I’m Ravi, the founder of Trail & Timber. I used to think a walk became a proper hike only when it was long, steep or impressive.

Two hikes

The route that looked easy on paper, and the shorter one after it.

The first timeEasy on paper.
  • Took far more time than expected.
  • Left very little energy for the return.
That idea about proper hikes lasted exactly one day.
The next timeA shorter trail.
  • Checked the elevation.
  • Packed for the weather.
  • Left enough daylight to stop, look around and change the plan.
Less dramatic, and much more enjoyable.
What changed

A walk does not become a proper hike by being long, steep or impressive. It becomes one when you plan enough margin to come back well.

Trail & Timber grew from that shift. Not from a summit, but from a shorter route chosen on purpose.
What the guides make visible

Four beginner decisions, brought into the open.

  • RouteWhich route fits todaydistance, elevation, daylight and the return.
  • PackingWhat belongs in the bagfor this route and this forecast, nothing more.
  • NavigationWhere the path actually continuesa pause at every junction.
  • DecisionsWhen the margin has changedand it is time to turn back.

These guides are designed to make beginner decisions visible.

Why Trail & Timber

Notice uncertainty sooner. Respond with a calmer decision.

The aim is not to remove uncertainty from the outdoors. It is to help you notice uncertainty sooner and respond with a calmer decision.

The aim is not

To remove uncertainty from the outdoors.

The aim is

To notice it sooner, and decide calmly.

No extreme routes, no expensive expedition kit and no assumed outdoor knowledge. Just a day that fits, and enough margin to enjoy it.

The four-guide series

Plan, pack, navigate and decide.

Each guide handles a different part of the hike, so the four create one connected system without repeating the same material. Use them in order, or open the one that matches the next problem you need to solve.

Plan · RouteYour First Day HikeChoose, plan and complete a route that fits.

Compare distance, elevation, time and conditions, then plan enough margin for the complete return.

Pack · PackingPack Smart for the TrailClothing, water, food and everyday essentials.

A comfortable day bag built around the route, the weather and the time outside.

Navigate · NavigationRead the TrailMaps, markers and navigation for beginners.

Know what to check before a junction, and what to do when map, signs and landscape stop matching.

Decide · DecisionsWeather, Pace & Turn-Back DecisionsMake safer choices before the trail makes them for you.

Checkpoints for time and energy, and a turn-back point set before the pressure builds.

Plan. Pack. Navigate. Decide. Plan well. Walk steadily. Return with margin.

From Ravi

A successful hike includes the return. Turning back is not a failure. It is one of the normal choices that keeps the day inside its margin.

Trail access, weather, regulations and difficulty change. Check current official local information before every hike, adapt the plan to your own health, experience and companions, and use trained local guidance when you are unsure.
